Louis XV Frame Reproduction by Glen Beckford Frames
A prestigious client recently commissioned Glen Beckford Frames to reproduce a Louis XV frame for a painting by a prominent French artist. These frames, crafted between 1723 and 1774, feature exquisite hand-carved corners, elegant moulding, and detailed S and C scroll designs that define the era’s style.
Our process begins with assembling the wood framework, carefully cut and glued to match the original shape. Skilled artisans then hand-carve the frame in the authentic Louis XV style, preserving the unique craftsmanship that machine carving can’t replicate.
Reliability, personalised service, and a deep passion for framing as a craft
Next, the frame is sealed, coated with multiple layers of gesso, and meticulously sanded through wet and dry sanding to achieve a perfectly smooth surface. The panels are specially prepared with a sand-and-gesso mix, followed by re-cutting to enhance intricate details like floral scrolls and shields.
To complement the artwork, we apply layers of yellow ochre and red clay mixed with size under the gilding, giving the frame a rich foundation that subtly shines through the gold leaf.
Our water gilding uses 23.75ct gold leaf, which is burnished and carefully toned to harmonise with the painting. The final frame is elegant and timeless, showcasing the beauty of traditional craftsmanship with a slightly bolder presence, as requested by the client.
Explore how Glen Beckford Frames brings centuries-old frame-making artistry into the modern day, crafting pieces that are works of art in their own right.
